Chuck
Ice Crystals

Tens of millions
drip by drip building
this magnificent sculpture

hung from roof eave,
reaching toward snow covered
ground. For an entire week

I have watched an uncanny
artist add on and subtract
from this icicle, following

immutable February traditions
of snow, sun, melt, drip, freeze,
wind, day, night, gravity,

repeat and repeat. All this
meshing in unrehearsed
improvisation

No one can tell the final shape
this gleaming work will take –
except we know

at some serendipitous moment,
under the weight of its own
beauty, it will break

away from my roof-line,
splinter into a splendoring
glitter of shards – radiant

in its scatter across silver
field of crusted snow
